I accept all major credit cards, and FSA/HSA cards, as forms of payment made directly to the HIPAA compliant client portal.
At this time, I am an out-of-network provider. I do not directly bill and accept insurance. Depending on your current health insurance provider you may be eligible for out-of-network benefits.
“Please remember that just because I don’t accept insurance upfront, it doesn’t mean that you yourself will not receive money from your insurance company.”
After careful consideration, I determined it would be in the best interest of my clients to not work with health insurers. Importantly, I determined that I would be unable to ensure your privacy when a third-party insurance agency is involved in your care. Technically, an insurance company has within their power the right to request further medical records, notes, etc. from me. It is very important to me to protect your privacy and I believe that disclosing your personal information to your insurance company is not in alignment with the ethical principles I abide by.
Notably, insurers require that you be diagnosed – and I find it’s not always necessary or helpful to put a mental health diagnostic “label” on you. I encourage you to be mindful of this – in order to use your insurance, a provider must diagnose you, and that mental health diagnosis becomes part of your permanent medical record. This may have important implications for you in the future – which you might not even be aware of today. For example, how might it impact your future insurability? Could the information be problematic for you if you ever find yourself involved in a court case someday? Could it possibly become a barrier to employment?
It’s important for you to know that if your insurance provider is involved, they will be the ones who dictate what you need, how many therapy sessions you get, and what treatment is prescribed – taking control away from both you and me. Overall, I decided that this system is prohibitive and not conducive to good care. You should be in full control of your health instead of a third party with nothing to lose if you don’t get the treatment and care you need.
You may still decide that you’d like to seek reimbursement from your insurance provider for out-of-network care. I am not able to coordinate this for you, but do encourage you to consult directly with your insurer to see if this may be an option for you. I am able to provide a superbill for you to submit directly to your insurance company. This means that, if you want to use your out-of-network benefits, you pay the full session fee out of pocket and I will provide you with a superbill form to provide to your insurance for reimbursement. The amount that your insurance may pay for your session will depend on your individual plan.
I always recommend calling your insurance company first to see – if you have out of network benefits and what they are; how high your deductible is; if pre-authorization is required; to get an estimate about what the reimbursement is (which can change based on the diagnosis and we won’t know this till we begin working together). Also, ask your insurance provider if they are reimbursing for remote telehealth sessions.
It’s important to be aware that some insurance providers will strictly limit the number of sessions you can attend and will only agree to cover certain mental health diagnoses. Further, an insurer may determine that they will only cover services if they decide the treatment is a “medical necessity.”
If you’ve never used out-of-network benefits and would like help submitting your forms, there is an app that can help. For more information click here https://www.getbetter.co/
If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. Otherwise, you may be charged for the full rate of the session.
