Enneagram Series: Type Seven

The enneagram is a system that shows us the nine ways that the people in the world default to in life. It explains the “why” of all that we do, think, and feel. There are nine types based on our core motivations and fear so that we can grow as an individual in order to thrive in our life. The enneagram answers the questions:  WHO are you? WHY are you? and HOW and WHAT do you want to change?  Each week we will examine one of the types so if you missed any of the weeks, you can get caught up by clicking the link in my bio to read the whole blog series.

The Pros and Cons of Being Enneagram Type Seven

Sevens are known as the Enthusiast enneagram. They keep busy, are fun-loving, and live to seek adventure. Sevens are your spontaneous friends who are always looking for a good time. A seven’s greatest fear is to have to face times of discomfort, pain, and suffering. They can fall into the tendency of staying on the move, never stepping away from the outside world to avoid facing the feelings they are experiencing on the inside.Sevens live to be content and happy. This desire contributes to their bright, optimistic personality. Sevens love to be surrounded by people, things, and adventure. When they are at their healthiest and happiest, a seven can be highly accomplished, grateful, happy, and content.

The Pros

Enthusiastic

Sevens approach life with enthusiasm as they seek adventure, thrills, happiness, and fun. Every little moment is made ten times better in the presence of a seven as they are able to find the beauty in even the smallest of moments.

Fun-Loving

Sevens love to have fun. They are known to approach life with a childlike wonder. Sevens are the friend who is always ready for adventures and spontaneity. A seven’s optimistic view on life is just what allows them to keep the good times rolling.

Adventurous

Sevens are fun-seeking, spontaneous, and above all, adventurous. They have the ability to make every little moment an adventure as they explore the world around them with the curiosity of a cat.

Intelligent

Sevens are very often known to be quick learners who are able to pick up on new skills with ease. Pairing their quick intelligence with their curious minds allows sevens to become their own versions of a “Jack-of-all-Trades.”

The Cons

Uncommitted

Sevens are great at picking up new skills. While this is a great talent to have, it can cause them to value their talents less and less. This can lead to an anxious feeling that prevents them from fully committing to much of anything as they try to experience everything.

Self-Absorbed

When sevens are not at their healthiest, they can have a tendency to become self-absorbed. As they pursue the things that make them feel happy, content, and comfortable, they may begin to forget to take care of the people around them.

Avoids Discomfort at all Costs

Many sevens have a fear of uncomfortable situations. They will charm and manipulate their way out of discomfort if they have to. This fear of feeling uncomfortable can lead sevens to avoid being left alone inside their own thoughts, dealing with their emotions and the things they are going through.

Prone to Addiction

Sevens do what they can to feel happy and content. This tendency can lead to addictions as they pursue instant gratification rather than working through discomfort.

Tips for Growth as a Type Seven

When sevens are struggling, they can become anxious, fearful, and impulsive. These feelings leave them vulnerable to addictions that can consume their life. As the seven dwells in their fear of being uncomfortable, their mental, physical, and social health will all begin to be negatively impacted. However, when sevens take care of their wellbeing and are at their healthiest, they can live their lives in gratitude, enjoying the small, beautiful things that life has to offer. Their love of life will fuel their curiosity, granting them the drive to become highly accomplished and successful.

Be Mindful of Your Choices

As a Seven, chances are you have a tendency to be impulsive and spontaneous. While your spontaneity can certainly be fun at times, it can also cause you trouble. When you feel ready to act on impulse, take a moment to consider the possible consequences of your actions. If there are no foreseeable negative consequences, move right on ahead. However, if there are a few predictable adverse effects to your actions, consider a new plan of action.

Take Care of Yourself for the Long Run

As a seven, you likely have fear of feeling uncomfortable. The issue with this is that some of our greatest moments can come when we break out of our comfort zone. While instant gratification can be rewarding in the moment, sometimes it can leave you feeling worse in the long run. When making decisions, try to be mindful of what will benefit you the most in the long run, rather than only thinking about the present moment.

Slow Down

Your tendency to fear missing out on something if you don’t experience everything at once can prevent you from truly enjoying anything. Rather than trying to experience everything at once, try to take things slower and experience one thing at a time. Rather than blasting your favorite songs on your drive home, sit in silence with your thoughts. Rather than jam-packing every weekend full of events, take a day to relax at home. Allow yourself to experience silence and stillness so you can build a comfortable and happy relationship with yourself.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Now, I’m not saying to jump headfirst out of your comfort zone. You can take it slow as you experience moments of discomfort. Sometimes, fear of the uncomfortable can leave you stuck in the same routine without any growth or change. Your addictions, anxieties, and worries will never fade if you never fight through the discomfort to make the change.Self-care is critical to keep yourself happy and healthy. As a seven, being mindful of your decisions and taking the time to truly slow down and enjoy the happy little moments of your day can be some of the best ways you can care for yourself. So, take a walk, shut off the external noises, and stop and smell the roses.
